Date constructed: started in 1475 and finished in 1481 Location: Vatican City, in Rome, Italy Facts about the Sistine Chapel:
New popes have been elected in the Sistine Chapel since 1492(the year Christopher Columbus set out to sea).
The chapel has the same dimensions of the Holy Temple of Solomon mentioned in the Bible.
The Sistine is most famous for the frescoes painted by Michelangelo, but the walls of the chapel were painted by Botticelli and illustrated the story of Moses on one, and the story of Christ on the other.
The Sistine Chapel was designed by Baccio Pontelli for Pope Sixtus IV, the pope for which the chapel was named after.
The ceiling was originally painted by Piero Matteo d’Amelia, but was repainted by Michelangelo.
Why the Sistine Chapel is important: The Sistine Chapel holds much rich history in religious ways, and political ways. It’s the place where our future popes are elected to continue the further success of the Roman Catholic Church.
